Counselling is available in a variety of flexible formats:
In Person
The primary method of counselling in Graham’s practice is face to face. Sessions are 50 minutes in length with about 5 minutes at the end of each appointment to cover administrative issues such as payment and rescheduling. Method of payment is cash or cheque. As much of human communication is non-verbal, in person allows for a greater richness in the process and is the preferred form of developing a therapeutic alliance. However there are circumstances where this is not possible and other methods of counselling can be utilized.
Telephone
Graham will do phone sessions with the same parameters as face to face counselling. That is, sessions are 50 minutes in length and cost remains the same. Graham will also provide brief consultation between sessions where necessary. If these are under 10 minutes there is no cost involved.
Live Streaming
However, the preferred method of non-face-to-face counselling is Live Streaming similar to Skype or Facetiming. This allows for some measure of non-verbal communication to become part of the therapeutic process. The parameters remain the same as with the other modes of counselling with sessions being 50 minutes in length. Typically the payment for session in this format are done by e-transfer.
Graham will communicate via email, but he does not do e-counselling. While email can provide a valuable sharing of information it is not fundamentally a therapeutic process (see didactic vs. experiential learning). Thus he will use email for administrative purpose or for the sharing of pertinent information. As such no cost is involved.
Please note: any content Graham receives by email will be treated with the same confidentiality as other communication, however he cannot guarantee the security of the email process.
